Could your sleep position, reflux, low ferritin, or nighttime leg movements be disrupting your sleep more than you realize?

Nicole Goldfarb continues her conversation with triple board-certified sleep specialist Dr. Jerald Simmons, taking a deeper look at commonly overlooked causes of poor sleep and daytime symptoms.

This episode examines:

✨ Why “positional sleep apnea” still requires proper evaluation and follow-up
✨ How sleep stages and limited testing time can affect positional sleep study results
✨ Why treatment should resolve symptoms, not only reduce snoring
✨ How nightly monitoring may provide information that a single sleep study cannot
✨ The relationship between airway obstruction, negative pressure, and nighttime reflux
✨ How sleep-disordered breathing may worsen reflux and asthma symptoms
✨ The difference between restless leg syndrome and periodic limb movement disorder
✨ Why ferritin can be low even when other iron markers appear normal
✨ How sleep disruption may resemble ADHD in children
✨ Why children struggling to fall asleep should be evaluated before routinely receiving melatonin

Dr. Simmons explains that restless leg syndrome occurs while a person is awake and creates an uncomfortable urge to move, while periodic limb movements happen during sleep. Although the conditions frequently occur together, periodic limb movements can also exist without daytime symptoms.

The discussion also highlights why ferritin deserves careful attention. Laboratory values may be reported as “normal” even when they are below the levels commonly considered appropriate when evaluating restless legs or periodic limb movements.

Dr. Jerald Simmons is board-certified in sleep medicine, neurology, and epilepsy. With more than 20 years of experience, he is recognized for his comprehensive approach to identifying and treating sleep disorders that are often missed or misunderstood.

This second installment reinforces an essential message: sleep problems should not be dismissed, masked, or treated solely according to one number. The symptoms, testing method, underlying cause, and response to treatment all matter.

🎧 Continue the sleep conversation and uncover the clues that may be hiding behind restless nights and challenging days.
